Genuine Saltillo Tile is a handmade product, made of special clay which occurs naturally in
Saltillo, Mexico. Because genuine Saltillo Tile is a handmade product, it tends to have an
uneven, rustic appearance. There are frequent color variations among genuine Saltillo tiles
based upon variations in the color of the clays and the location of the tile in the kiln in which the
tile is baked.
By contrast, there are counterfeiters of "Saltillo Tile," who do not manufacture their tile by hand,
nor do they use clay from Saltillo in their tile. These counterfeit tiles are not made in Saltillo,
Mexico, and are not manufactured in the same way as genuine Saltillo Tile. These counterfeiters
label their machine-made tile as "Saltillo Tile" and to the untrained eye, a customer would believe
they were purchasing real, genuine Saltillo Tile.
Retail giant Home Depot sells in their stores a machine-made tile labeled as "Saltillo Tile." This
tile is not handmade. It is not manufactured in Saltillo, nor are clays from Saltillo used in its
manufacture. The color variations in the machine-made tile are the result of paint, not the
natural variations based upon the clay or the location of the tile in the kiln. Although the box in
which Home Depot sells the tile reads “Saltillo Tile,” that claim is false. The boxes in which Home
Depot sells this counterfeit tile indicate in small letters on the side of the box that the tile was
manufactured by "Ladrillera Mecanizada," which means Mechanized Brickworks.
We are attorneys representing the Saltillo Tile Union, which was composed of 1500 families who
earned their livelihood from producing Saltillo Tile. Over 1200 of these families have been
financially devastated by the loss of income due to the sale of counterfeit tile. In addition, many
members of the public may have been misled by Home Depot.

Over the last several years, Home Depot has been selling tile labeled Satlillo Tile, and claimed that the tile was from the
City of Saltillo, Mexico, hand made and from the famous Saltillo clays only found in that region. This false representation
